A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

This is an exciting time in the field as we have seen significant scientific advances in tumor immunology, which has led directly to numerous new drug approvals over the last few years. As Vice President Joe Biden mentioned at a recent stakeholder discussion, we are at an inflection point in oncology with much progress but also considerable expectations. The path forward will depend on continued collaboration among scientists, clinicians, government officials and patient advocates. At this exciting time, it is also clear that cancer immunotherapy will be taking center stage in both national and international conversations.

Your dedication and hard work in the cancer immunotherapy field has made this all possible. In that spirit, we look forward to recognizing Cancer Immunotherapy Month with a number of educational events and activities throughout June culminating with the National Cancer Moonshot Summit on June 29, 2016.

The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) as an organization is dedicated to advancing the science and application of cancer immunotherapy and has long been innovators at the forefront of education in this space. Along with other SITC leadership, I have been pleased to participate in the Moonshot Initiative to represent our society. I think you will agree that we have many exciting events throughout June that reflect our commitment to providing top-level education for all stakeholders helping to position cancer immunotherapy as one of the four treatment modalities. Upcoming events include:

  • Live educational programs for diverse audiences
  • Fundraising and networking activities
  • Opportunities for scientific collaboration
  • SITC Moonshot Initiative event
  • And more yet to be announced!

In this newsletter you will see the depth and breadth of the activities we have planned this month aimed at advancing our mission of improving patient outcomes and ultimately finding a cure. I look forward to celebrating Cancer Immunotherapy Month together.

Best regards,

Howard L. Kaufman, MD, FACS
SITC President

First Clinical Trials Monitor Published
The newest journal section, Clinical Trials Monitor reports on important new trial results; updates on new drug approvals and ongoing clinical studies; key perspectives on clinical issues and advances in the field relevant to the everyday use of cancer immunotherapy in the clinic. This section also aims to address trial design and analysis considerations that may be unique to cancer immunotherapy, and to provide guidance for implementing and managing the use of cancer immunotherapies in the clinic.

The May 2016 issue marked the publication of the first Clinical Trials Monitor. Entitled “Harnessing autophagy to promote anti-tumor Immunity with the DRibbles vaccine,” by David Page and colleagues, this “Glimpse Into the Future” succinctly describes the pre-clinical rationale, translational data, and early clinical data pertaining to the DRibbles vaccine. This novel vaccine is produced by manipulating autophagy, and generates a multi-valent vaccine that could potentially induce tumor-specific immune responses against a variety of conventional tumor-associated antigens, as well as short-lived proteins and tumor-derived defective ribosomal products that would otherwise not be cross-presented under physiologic conditions.
